Care throughout pregnancy with midwives is a special and unique experience. Midwives think holistically, meaning they combine diagnostic testing and blood work with thorough examination of nutrition, hydration, activity level, emotional wellness, and inclusion of partners to tailor care to each client. In addition to email, phone, or text support, we record your baby’s heart tones, size, movements, and your overall health through the duration of your care.
For the first 26 weeks of pregnancy, midwives meet with their clients once a month for prenatal appointments. Beginning at 28 weeks, midwives meet with their clients every two weeks. At 36 weeks, midwives meet with their clients once a week until the birth of their baby. For many home birth midwives, the 36 week appointment is a home visit. Each visit can range from 45-90 minutes, and this time allows clients to build a strong bond with their midwife. In labor, home birth midwives go to their client when active labor begins, or when the client feels they need support from their midwife. After the birth, the midwife will stay for 2-4 hours to settle the family in, leaving them healthy, stable, and with the baby latched on with breast/chestfeeding.
In the postpartum period, midwives go to their client to provide care. Visits can include day 1, day 3, 1 week, 2 weeks, 6 weeks, or as needed. These visits assess the health of client and baby, the feeding relationship, and the emotional wellbeing of the family. When care ends, we want to leave the new family well established, feeling confident and happy.
